One thing we do to help our kids be excited about going to bed is that we have them pretend to be an animal. They have pretended to be a kangaroo, bunny, snake, horse, frog...many different animals have pretended to go to bed in our house.
One night in February (and a few nights since) Brandon pretended to be a horse and had all three kids ride on his back to their beds.

There was much laughing and many squeals of delight as the kids enjoyed their little horsey ride to their beds.

There was such a wonderful feeling in our home that night, a feeling that the kids are completely and totally happy.
Hey we did that tonight with our kids. It is fun. I remember doing that with me dad as well. :)
